Questions we get asked
What’s the difference between scar optimisation and scar revision?
Scar optimisation focuses on helping a scar heal as well as possible, or improving it without surgery, using laser, SkinPen, skincare, and aftercare. It’s often used before surgery and in the early healing stages to reduce redness, thickness, and uneven texture. Scar revision is usually for older or more established scars and may involve stronger laser work, subcision, or surgical options if appropriate.
When can I start treatment after surgery?
You can start once the wound is fully closed and you’ve been medically cleared. Some support can begin fairly early, while deeper resurfacing or more intensive scar work usually comes later once the scar is stable. We’ll assess your healing and set a safe timeline that protects recovery and improves results.
Will laser work for my scar and my skin type?
Laser can help most scars, but the best device and settings depend on the scar type, age, location, and your skin tone. Some treatments target redness, others target pigment, and others target texture and collagen remodelling. If laser is not the right first step, we’ll tell you and recommend the right alternative.
How many sessions will I need?
Most scar plans involve a course of treatments rather than one appointment. The number of sessions depends on how mature the scar is, how deep it goes, and how your skin responds. After your consultation we’ll give you a clear plan and realistic expectations for improvement.
What downtime should I expect?
Downtime varies depending on the treatment intensity. Some sessions cause mild redness for 24 hours, others can cause a few days of redness, dryness, or a rough texture while the skin renews. We’ll explain recovery clearly in advance and give you simple aftercare instructions.
How do I book and where are you based?
You can book online through this link and choose the appointment type that suits you. We’re based in Farnley, Leeds, and you’ll find full contact details and directions at the bottom of the page. If you’re unsure what to book, start with an assessment.
Case Study
Scar expert! I booked into the scar clinic to see Dr Bex as I’d recently had an accident and split my forehead open which was then glued together (badly) by a paramedic. It was very early days but I was concerned about recovery so I wanted some guidance and advice as to what could be done to improve healing and how it would eventually look. Dr Bex immediately advised the wound was not healing properly and said it needed immediate action as it was still open.
I was booked in to have the wound reopened, cleaned out and restitched and I was amazed at the difference and how neat it looked and i am much more positive about how it will look fully healed. I cannot recommend The Scar Clinic highly enough, the expertise, the care and the results are truly spectacular. I will certainly be back as part of my ongoing care!
